ARIEL Interiors Workshop

ariel

The workshop will take place 2-3 December, 2019 in Zürich.

Please register your attendance here.

he objective of the meeting is to discuss various aspects linked to atmosphere-interiors interactions, and how atmospheric composition can be used to improve exoplanetary characterisation.  In particular, we aim to address the following questions:

  • What are the dominate mechanisms for atmosphere-interior interactions?
  • Under what conditions the atmospheric composition represents the composition of the deep interior?
  • How can we use the knowledge of exoplanets to better understand our own planetary system?
  • What are the key elements that should be observed in exoplanetary atmospheres (and how it varies with planetary mass, age, etc.)?
  • How can we link the atmospheric/bulk composition to planetary formation and evolution?
  • What are the potential diagnostics?
  • What are the idea targets to be observed (e.g., planetary mass, distance to the star etc.)?

This meeting should be viewed as a preparation for the Red book writing.
In particular, everyone is encouraged to think about additional questions that should be addressed during the meeting, and of the requirements in terms of preferable targets (planetary masses/sizes), and elemental abundances that can be used to better characterise the planets.

Conference venue
The Workshop will take place at the University of Zurich IRCHEL campus (Winterthurerstrasse 190, 8057 Zürich) in the Institute for Computational Science, room 11-F-90.

Travel to Zurich
Zurich can be reached by plane, train, international bus, or car. The international Zurich Airport (ZRH) is located about 8 km from the conference venue. Trains and buses arrive at Zurich main station (Zurich Hauptbahnhof), located in the city center, about 2 km from the conference venue. To find train connections, go to the website of Swiss railways: www.sbb.ch. For international buses, you can check: www.checkmybus.com.

Arrival from the airport
When you arrive at Zurich airport, look out for signs to the bus/tram station. Depending on which terminal you arrive at, this will be 5-10 mins walking. There will be blue ZVV ticket machines there and you can buy a one-way ticket to Zurich for 6.80 CHF. The ticket machines take cards and coins, but no banknotes. You need to take the tram no 10 in direction "Zürich, Bahnhofplatz/HB" until the stop called “ETH/Universitätspital” (takes ~25 mins).

Arrival from the main station
If you arrive at Zurich main station, you can take tram #10 which will also bring you to “ETH/Universitätspital” (takes about 10 mins). Single tickets cost 4.40 CHF and can be purchased at the blue ZVV machines that accepts cards and coins (again, no banknotes).
